Sleep tips to survive Christmas

When it comes to wellbeing, sleep and how we prepare for it should be a major focus - after all we spend roughly a third of our lives sleeping! We have some practical tips to help you get the Zzzz's you need.

Sleep is an important part of your daily routine—you spend about one-third of your time doing it! That's 8 hours a day if you are lucky! Quality sleep – and getting enough of it when you need it -- is as essential to survival as food and water.

Without sleep you can’t create or maintain the pathways in your brain that let you learn and archive new memories. It also gets harder to concentrate and respond quickly.

Sleep is important for a number of brain functions, including how neurons communicate with each other. Surprisingly, your brain and body stay very active while you sleep. Recent findings suggest that sleep plays a 'clean up' role that removes the toxins from your brain that build up in your waking hours. We know that everyone needs sleep but the biology behind sleep remains a mystery.

We do know that sleep affects almost every type of tissue and system in the body – from the major organs including the brain, heart, and lungs to metabolic systems, immune function, mood and detoxification.

You can start to improve your sleep by following these simple steps:

  • Make your bedroom a haven.
  • Don't eat dinner too late
  • Avoid sugary foods, caffeine and alcohol in the late afternoon/evening.
  • Switch your smart phone onto 'Aeroplane Mode' and store it as far away from your head as possible.
  • Avoid exercising late in the evening before bed.
  • Dim the lights before heading to bed
  • Ditch the electronics before bed.
