Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a common functional bowel disorder where symptoms include abdominal cramping, bloating, diarrhoea and constipation. Understanding the true prevalence of this condition is difficult as many individuals do not seek medical attention. Diagnosis is made using the ROME IV criteria after other structural or biochemical causes have been ruled out. IBS can significantly impact daily life on the individual and can be a frustrating condition. No two cases are the same and a tailored and individualised approach is needed to achieve long lasting and effective results.
