Polycystic Ovarian Syndrome – PCOS

Polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS) is a condition that affects a woman’s hormone levels. Women with PCOS produce higher-than-normal amounts of male hormones. This hormone imbalance causes them to skip menstrual periods and makes it harder for them to get pregnant.

It is relatively common with approximately 5-10% of women having PCOS. There appears to be many causes however obesity, insulin resistance and genetics are major risk factors. Symptoms generally begin to occur between 20 and 30yrs of age. If left unmanaged, PCOS can lead to the development of serious health conditions such as diabetes, cardiovascular disease, elevated cholesterol and cancer.

Common signs and symptoms include:

  • Acne
  • Excessive hair growth (hirsutism)
  • Hair loss or thinning
  • High blood pressure
  • Infertility
  • Increased waist circumference
  • Diabetes
